Is AI-Assisted Development Changing the Transformation Equation?

As AI-assisted development lowers barriers to delivery, it is becoming easier for organisations to revisit problems they once learned to live with. The hard part? Deciding where to focus.

Recently, our CTO shared his perspective on AI-assisted development and the rise of vibe coding, exploring what these technologies mean from a software engineering perspective. It got me thinking about the conversations I am increasingly having with clients, and how these same developments are changing the way I think about discovery and transformation.

As a consultant I spend most of my time leading early-stage, value-led discovery engagements with clients, so I've been thinking about what AI-assisted development means for the wider transformation process. Because while much of the conversation understandably focuses on how AI can accelerate software development, its impact isn't limited to the build itself.

We're Already Seeing the Shift

At Robiquity, we're already seeing this through the way we work with clients. Combining AI-assisted development with a Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) approach allows us to move from idea to prototype much faster, validate assumptions earlier and iterate more closely with clients. Activities that once took weeks are increasingly being completed in days. This is allowing us to explore multiple approaches before any significant delivery effort is committed.

AI-assisted development isn't only accelerating the build. Discovery, design, prototyping and engineering are becoming much more tightly connected, with ideas moving rapidly between understanding the problem, testing potential solutions and responding to feedback.

The result is a faster, more iterative transformation process from initial opportunity through to delivery.

Changing the Equation

When more of the transformation process can happen faster and with less effort, the economics begin to change too.

Many organisations have genuine problems they've simply learned to live with. Inefficient processes, manual workarounds and frustrating user experiences persist because, historically, the time, complexity and cost of solving them has outweighed the value that could be realised.

These problems haven't been ignored because they don't matter; they've been deprioritised because the business case for solving them hasn't stacked up.

AI-assisted development has the potential to change that equation.

Take Procure-to-Pay within large online retailers as an example. It's a critical business capability spanning procurement, finance, operations and supplier management. Across the end-to-end process you'll find dozens of manual activities, approval bottlenecks, duplicated effort and unnecessary hand-offs. None of these issues are individually transformational, but together they consistently create significant operational inefficiency.

The difficulty is that those inefficiencies are spread across multiple teams, systems and stakeholders. The benefits of addressing them are equally fragmented, making it difficult to build a compelling business case for end-to-end transformation using traditional delivery approaches. Whilst the process is a critical enabler of the business, it rarely has the same direct link to revenue growth as customer-facing initiatives. The result? Investment is often prioritised elsewhere.

As AI-assisted development reduces the investment and effort required to design, prototype and deliver solutions, the equation starts to change. Opportunities that were previously considered too complex, too niche or simply too expensive start to become viable.

This lowers the barrier to transformation and creates an opportunity to revisit problems that organisations may previously have learned to live with. In that sense, AI isn't just changing how we build solutions. It's changing what transformation opportunities organisations can justify investing in.

Discovery Becomes the Differentiator

Lowering the barrier to delivery doesn't mean every problem should now be solved, or that every opportunity should be treated equally. As more opportunities become economically viable, organisations need to be even more deliberate about where they focus their time and investment. The challenge becomes identifying which opportunities best support strategic priorities,where the greatest value can be realised, and where technology can genuinely address the underlying problem. That's where strategic alignment, value-led discovery and service design become increasingly important.

Without those disciplines, cheaper and faster delivery risks producing more solutions instead of more value.

The same principle applies once solutions are delivered. A solution only creates value when it is adopted. If organisations can design and deploy technology more quickly than ever before, then ensuring those solutions are understood, embedded and embraced becomes an increasingly important part of the value equation. Technology may be getting easier to build, but realising value from it is still fundamentally a people challenge.

Meaningful Business Outcomes

There's no doubt AI-assisted development is changing software delivery, and at Robiquity we're already seeing the benefits through the way we work with our clients. Faster prototyping, shorter feedback loops and more iterative delivery are all incredibly positive developments, and I believe they'll continue to reshape how transformation programmes are delivered.

The organisations that create the most value won't necessarily be those building the most solutions. They'll be the ones that are best at identifying the right opportunities, prioritising investment and ensuring technology delivers meaningful business outcomes. In a world where building becomes easier, understanding where to focus becomes one of the most valuable capabilities an organisation can develop.

That's why I believe discovery, service design and value-led transformation aren't becoming less important in the age of AI. They're becoming the disciplines that determine whether AI delivers business value in the first place.
