AI and Operations: The Importance of People

What impact is AI having on business operations and why is it essential to remember to keep people at the heart of your AI agenda?

There’s been no shortage of Artificial Intelligence conversations over the last couple of years. It’s been dominating many boardroom discussions, and many organisations already have an AI strategy, a pilot programme or a proof of concept underway.

The promise of AI is an extremely attractive one: smarter processes, faster decisions and slicker business operations. But beneath the hype, there’s a very simple truth: AI on its own doesn’t transform operations. People do.

Unlocking limitless value from AI requires more than experiments, it requires designing AI around the people who run the operations every day.

Organisations who fail to consider the impact of AI on their people are simply adding another layer of complexity to their business. Throwing AI at complex and convoluted processes won’t deliver an operational miracle, it will just make things worse.

AI Without People = Minimal Impact

Many organisations are approaching AI as a purely technological challenge. There’s a big focus on platforms, model, integrations and architecture. These are all important, but none of them automatically improve business operations.

The real challenge is answering the million-dollar question: “Where can AI make work easier, better and more valuable for people?”

This shifts the focus dramatically away from a scatter-gun technology implementation and instead focuses on intentional and deliberate application of technology that improves experiences for everybody - colleagues and customers alike.

Getting it Right: Start with People

The most effective AI transformations typically have one thing in common: people sit at the heart of the AI agenda.

To enable this, this means understanding how different parts of the organisation experience and interact with AI. In most organisations, there’s typically three key personas that share a vested interest in the AI agenda.

1.     The Executive Leaders - They set the ambition. They define whether AI is treated as a small set of tactical experiments or a genuine transformation of how the organisation operates. Their role is to sponsor the reinvention of their organisation, providing confidence through uncertainty and defining a vision for what the workplace of the future looks like.

2.     The Technologists - Technology teams are essential to making AI work safely, securely and at scale. But for AI to succeed in operations, technologists must remain grounded in the reality of operational work. Taking the time to understand how processes actually function and where the friction sits, is often the difference between prototypical and practical impact.

3.     The Operations Teams - Perhaps the most important group of all. Operations is not just beneficiaries of AI; they’re often the best sources of ideas for where it delivers value. They understand the inefficiencies, the workarounds and the pain points better than anybody else. When empowered and supported properly, operations play a central role in reinventing how the organisation works, but also what their own role looks likein the world of AI.

Elevation, Not Elimination of Operations

Too many AI conversations focus on the narrow benefits that AI can bring - cost reduction, capacity creation, the speeding up of processing. While these are all true, the bigger opportunity is more exciting.

AI unlocks intelligent, responsive and innovative operations. But most importantly, it helps us place emphasis on human operations where it matters most.

The organisations that succeed with AI won’t be the ones chasing the latest technology or deploying the largest volume of solutions across their organisation. They’ll be the ones that understand their operations, empower their people and use AI to create frictionless experiencesfor all - and in turn unlocking real business value.

The goal isn’t to build smarter technology, it’s to build smarter operations - powered by people and amplified by AI.
